Common questions

Nonprofit payment processing FAQs

Short answers to the questions development and finance teams ask most often when they evaluate AdvoCharge.

What do nonprofits typically pay in payment processing fees?

Popular donation platforms commonly charge roughly 2.2 to 3.5 percent plus 30 cents per transaction, and some add platform or PCI fees on top. A dedicated merchant account on interchange-plus pricing usually costs less at meaningful volume, and qualifying registered charities may be eligible for reduced nonprofit interchange categories from the card networks - we check that as part of a free statement review.

Is ACH cheaper than credit cards for donations?

Substantially. ACH bank transfers carry a small flat fee instead of a percentage, so a $1,000 donation costs under a dollar to collect by ACH versus $25 or more by card. For recurring major donors, offering ACH alongside cards is one of the easiest ways to keep more of every gift.

Can we set up recurring monthly giving?

Yes. Tokenized recurring billing runs scheduled donations automatically against a saved card or bank account, which steadies cash flow and reduces donor lapse. Card and ACH recurring schedules run under the same merchant account.

Do nonprofits need to be PCI-DSS compliant?

Yes - any organization accepting card payments does. For most nonprofits the obligation is the annual Self-Assessment Questionnaire and, when processing online, scheduled vulnerability scans. AdvoCharge walks every nonprofit client through it; our plain-language PCI guide covers what is actually involved.

Should a nonprofit use a merchant account or a donation platform?

Donation platforms win on convenience at small scale. Once card volume is steady - galas, program fees, recurring giving, a thrift operation - a dedicated merchant account usually wins on cost, and you own the donor payment relationship rather than renting it. We will read your statements and tell you honestly which side of that line you are on.

Donation processing fees: keeping more of every gift

Every percentage point of processing cost is money donors gave to the mission and the mission never received. The places it leaks: platform fees stacked on processing fees, card-on-file recurring gifts priced as premium transactions, and ACH left unused for exactly the donors who would accept it.
